Design Dilemma

Eric and I see eye to eye on most things. Our designs sensibilities are very compatible and we work well off each other. However, we have run into our first design dispute. On the back side of the house there is a roof overhang that is original to the house. One of us feels that while it is original to the house, the overhang looks out of place against what could be a nice clean roofline. The other feels that it is an original detail, while quirky, should remain as is. While we disagree on what the actual roofline should look like, we both agree that the construction and detail of the supports are well done and an interesting original accent to the house. We have toyed with the idea of tearing the supports down and reinstalling them, adding a trellis instead. When it comes down to it we need outside advice and opinions. I ask all friends and family who are taking the time to check out our blog to give us your honest opinion on this design dilemma. Take a look at the pictures and let us know your thoughts, but post quick. We have to make these decisions quick before we get a new roof!

Also, check out the gatesstudio prototype for our deck chair and ongoing progress in the kitchen. Currently we are trying to restore the fir floors and were beginning to expose the old oil chimney which we plan to take out.

  1. If you are doing this as an authentic restoration (at least on the outside), keep it.
If not you'll have to come up with something better, which = $$$. HRS

  2. I definitely think its "quirky"- looking at it quickly I'm not sure how you'd deal with it if you took it off and more importantly, I'm not sure what that would do to the way the doorway feels with the windows. Right now the distance from the roofline to the windows and doors goes together, sort of. If you remove that strange little portico it might make the door look very strange.

  3. I think it's a funny little pimple. What if you made it bigger, used the charming brackets, etc. from the original, and made it the same width.. as the dormer above? I think it would be nice if there was a break in the roof line where it attaches to the main roof so the roof angle would be a little shallower. It would probably need posts, and a stoop under it too. Aren't you glad you asked? Also think you should make the window in the dormer bigger. Maybe two skinny ones instead of one. I know, I have all kinds of expensive ideas!

  4. The Demetrieus 's weighed in. They liked the detail of the wood holding up the overhand but also agreed that maybe you might want a post or to make step more important -could use railing. They also thought about a peak Love mom

  5. I think it doesn't add to anything since it just hangs there with no posts. I would do some research on arts and craft designs to see if its just missing something like posts and a step down that would makes it more important. Does look odd but maybe that's the style. B
